Soak it, wring it out and tie it on — as the water evaporates it draws warmth away, and it keeps working for a couple of hours before it needs re-wetting. Useful on a summer walk, at a show, or in the car.

• A cooling bandana helps your dog stay comfortable. It does not prevent heatstroke. On hot days walk early or late, stay in shade, bring water, and never leave a dog in a parked car.
• Learn the warning signs of overheating — heavy or frantic panting, drooling, unsteadiness, bright red gums. If you see them, stop, move your dog somewhere cool, offer water and contact a vet.
• Tie loosely enough to slide two fingers underneath, and take it off when your dog is unsupervised or crated.
• Re-wet it as soon as it feels dry or warm — a dry wrap does nothing.
• Not suitable for pets that chew fabric. Measurements are approximate.
